Home Improvements
Glossary and Video
Improvements to your home can save money on utility bills
and are good investments if you decide to sell it.
    Basic Tips

  • Insulation can reduce noises coming in from outside.

    Ways to reduce utility costs:

    Appliances

  • Lower  water heater temperature to 120'F.

  • Turn off computer, printer, monitor and other home office appliances when
not in use. You can use the standby or hibernate options on your computer
    instead of turning it off.

  • Insulate water heater and any pipes exposed to the outside.

    Heating and Cooling

  • Seal air leaks around windows and doors.

  • Seal any leaks and insulate heating and cooling system ducts.

  • Insulate attics, walls and floors to keep hot air out in the summer and warm
    air in during the winter.

  • Add a programmable thermostat to heating and cooling system.

  • In winter, open curtains to let the sun warm your home.

  • Use fans to circulate warm or cool air.

  • Use whole house fans  and attic fans to exhaust stale hot air and bring in cool
    fresh air during cool seasons.

    Lights

  • Use compact fluorescent light bulbs.

    Water

  • Using an aerator on faucet spouts reduces the amount of water used and
makes water flow more smoothly without splashing.

Organic Gardening
Glossary and Video
The earth's soil is alive with beneficial organisms, plants and
small creatures. Having clean soil insures that these earth
dwellers can produce a productive ecosystem good for
    growing food and enjoying nature.

Growing fruits, vegetables, herbs and ornamental gardens
organically will help keep our air, soil and water clean.
    Basic Tips

  • Having a cleaner environment attracts beneficial insects and animals that will
help to control insect pests naturally.

  • Native plants in a garden and landscape will use less water and some even
    require less maintenance.

  • Composting will reduce yard and garden waste and produce free organic soil
    conditioner.

  • Adding compost to the soil allows it to hold water, nutrients and helps
improve drainage. Compost feeds the soils beneficial microorganisms that
help plants grow healthy and more disease resistant.

  • Vermicomposting (composting with redworms) kitchen left overs will also
reduce waste and produce a rich organic fertilizer. Fresh worm manure is
populated with many microorganisms that benefit the soil and plants.

  • Making a compost pile directly on the ground will produce an environment
perfect for microorganisms and earthworms. They will soon multiply and
populate the pile, making rich healthy compost and castings.

  • Loosening the soil will allow water and air to get to the roots of plants and to
microorganisms. Roots need oxygen and microorganisms make the soil
healthy. Earthworms are good at loosening the soil, making room for plant
roots and producing and spreading beneficial microorganisms.

Recycling
Glossary and Video
Reducing waste that would go to a landfill will allow that
landfill to be used longer. This could save money on garbage
    disposal cost and land space.

Reuse things that are in good condition when possible.

Recycling metal, paper, plastic and glass will help to keep our
environment clean and can also be profitable.
    Basic Tips

  • Support local recycling efforts and purchase products compatible with your
neighborhood recycling program. Once you make a plan and start recycling,
its easy to continue making our earth clean.

  • Clean recyclable items. You may get more money for them.

  • Buy products made from recycled materials (post-consumer materials or
    waste) when possible.

  • When recycling a computer, be sure to completely erase all data on the hard
drive first. If that can't be done, take the drive case out of the computer and
    break it into pieces.

  • Recycling reduces energy usage.

  • Food and garden waste are biodegradable wastes recycled by composting.

Health
Glossary and Video
Eating healthy, a good lifestyle and exercising can lead to a
    healthy life.
    Basic Tips

  • If you choose to take vitamins, minerals, herbs or change your diet, make sure
you are informed and consult a physician or dietitian before taking any
    supplements.

  • Sometimes we may need to take supplements in the form of vitamins,
minerals or herbs to maintain good health.

  • Buy whole foods and use them instead of processed foods whenever possible.
Fresh from the garden, recently frozen and canned are best.

  • Lose weight the healthy way. Try to consume less calories and then burn
more calories than you are taking in. Always eat plenty of fruits, vegetables
and whole grains. Drinking water is very important in any diet, whether losing
    or gaining weight.

  • Eating foods with protein and fiber will help you lose weight and feel full.
Protein builds muscle and fiber helps with regular bowl movements and also
helps to clean out toxins in the intestines. Its best to get proteins in food from
beans, peas, nuts, seeds, fruits and vegetables rather than meat.

    For a healthy immune system:

  • Get plenty of sleep, at least 8 hours.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Vitamins:  C, E,
  • Minerals:  Zinc, selenium
  • Foods:  Yogurt for good digestion , garlic, walnuts and almonds.
  • Cold water fish oils and flax seed oil for omega-3 fatty acids.

    For a healthy digestive system:

  • Being relaxed and calm before, during and after eating can be a benefit to
    digestion and good health.
  • Chew your food completely.
  • Avoid overeating. Drinking a little water before eating helps.
  • Try to avoid cold foods and drinks until after eating meals. They can reduce
    digestive enzymes.
  • Freshly cooked and partially raw foods (vegetables) digest better and are
    absorbed by the body easily.
  • Taking probiotics helps digestion.
